Marianne Vos (Stichting Rabo Women) won the Trofeo Alfredo Binda for third time yesterday by putting on a show of strength in the last few kilometers of the 131.2 km race. Vos left her opponents behind and arrived alone at the finish line with a 34-second advantage on a group of eight led by Tatiana Guderzo (MCipollini), while third place went to German rider Trixi Worrack (Team Specialized). Vos has strengthened her leadership in the World Cup, having now won the first two races (Ronde van Drenthe and Trofeo Alfredo Binda).
"I am delighted with this win," said Voss. "I really couldn’t say which of my three victories in Cittiglio was the best. Today the group reformed following Loes Gunnewijk’s (Greenedge) break and then I took advantage of a moment of indecision to break away from them".
Tatiana Guderzo, who has been recovering from stomach problems, was happy with second place, "I didn’t really feel good, then kilometer after kilometer I found the strength to keep going and end up being a protagonist at the finish line".
This was the only women's World Cup race scheduled in Italy this year. Their next World Cup race is April 1st, Tour of Flanders.
At the starting line, a minute’s silence was observed in memory of Michele Silvestri, an Italian soldier who was killed Saturday in Afghanistan.

The Italian round of the 2009 UCI Road Women World Cup, the Trofeo Alfredo Binda-Comune di Cittiglio, has been awarded the trophy for the best event organized in 2009 within the UCI Road Women World Cup, the UCI Under 23 Nations’ Cup and the UCI Juniors Nations’ Cup. The UCI awards this trophy every two years.
The President of the International Cycling Union (UCI) Mr Pat McQuaid presented the trophy to the event organiser Mr Mario Minervino during a ceremony in Montreux, Switzerland, last night.
The Italian women’s event came out above the other 20 races in the running thanks to the quality of its organisation, respect of the UCI rules, level of participation and media coverage.
The first edition of the Trofeo Alfredo Binda-Comune di Cittiglio took place in 2007, and it has been part of the UCI Road Women World Cup since 2008. The 2010 edition of the race will take place on 28th March.

The first race of the UCI Women's Road World Cup series was won on Sunday in Cittiglio (Varese) by Marianne Vos who out sprinted Emma Johannson, third went to American Kristin Armstrong who out sprinted Eva Lutz for a podium spot. Vos's average speed was 36,350 Km/h on the same course of 2008.
It was a cold, driving rain, miserable day. It was so miserable that only 49 of the 135 starters finished the race.
