Vigorelli Design Competition Winner


The winner of the Maspes-Vigorelli Design Competion has been announced: Vittorio Grassi Architetto & Partners of Milano.

What we know at the moment about the winning proposal:
-it will be a multifunction facility dedicated to sports with a capacity of 5,570 seats
-a synthetic grass infield will be used for rugby, American football; other sports that can be hosted in the infield: hockey, basketball, tennis, boxing
-the track will be 250 meters with a small section of the original track preserved (addendum: track is removable); the original track was 400m
-there will be a cycling museum in the north wing
- the facility will not have a cover therefore it will not be able to host world championships
-construction will begin in 2014
-construction completion in 2016
-cost € 18 million

100 Designs Submitted in Vigorelli Design Competition

The Municipality of Milan has announced that they received, by the first stage cut-off of 12.00 on Tuesday, December 4th, 2012, one hundred designs in the international design competition for the re-qualification of the Maspes-Vigorelli Velodrome. A jury will select ten designers for participation in the Competition stage within 30 days following that deadline.

The ten selected participants will then have until no later than 12.00 on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 to submit their designs. The Jury proceedings will be concluded within 30 days of the deadline for submission of documents; the winning entry will be announced within 10 days of the conclusion of the Jury proceedings.

Vigorelli Design Competition Open

The Municipality of Milan announced an international design competition for the re-qualification of the Maspes-Vigorelli Velodrome. The maximum construction expenditure set for the planned intervention (project funding framework, inclusive of all costs) is € 18.000.000,00 (including VAT).

The pre-qualification stage ends no later than 12.00 on Tuesday, December 4th, 2012. A jury will then select ten designers for participation in the Competition stage within 30 days following the deadline for the presentation of applications. The selected particpants wiill then have until no later than 12.00 on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 to submit their designs. The Jury proceedings will be concluded within 30 days of the deadline for submission of documents; the winning entry will be announced within 10 days of the conclusion of the Jury proceedings.

Excerpts from competiton design documentation:
"The objective is to renew and at the same time transform the approximately 80-year-old structure into a modern amenity in compliance with the most recent regulations in order to accommodate the greatest number of sports disciplines and functions associated with the territory. In summary, a venue open to the city year-round that can relate in new and diverse ways with the local area and can host educational-game exhibitions, cultural activities, trade area events, etc., in addition to sport."

"Participants in the International Design Competition are asked to propose solutions to add value to the sports structure that could include re-use of the historical wooden cycling track. In such case, the planners will consider the criticalities related to its maintenance (upgrading to current standards, cost of restoring wooden surface, necessary protection against atmospheric agents)."

"Where the planner proposes to completely remove the historical wooden track, the contender will estimate the possibility of conserving, even partially, a portion of the same (e.g. the parabolic curves) as a memento of the historical importance of the Velodromo."


History of the velodrome as defined in the document:
"The history of the Velodromo Maspes-Vigorelli begins with the growth of interest in cycling at the end of the 19th century. In Milan races round the Bastioni (ramparts) led to the first important road races (Milan-Sanremo, Giro di Lombardia and Giro d’Italia). The first tracks were laid out: the first circuit in hardened cinder at the Trotter was followed by another set up in the Arena in wood. At the turn of the century track racing consolidated its success.

Velodromo del Sempione was built in Via Giovanni di Procida. It was an outdoor track that quickly became famous for the exploits of numerous cyclists. It was demolished some decades later in 1928 because of its age but also because the Palazzo dello Sport, which had been opened in the nearby Fiera in 1923, accommodated an indoor wooden track which could be assembled for cycling.

In 1935 the Municipality of Milan, on the suggestion of the industrialist and city council member Giuseppe Vigorelli, a former cycle-track racer, decided to reconstruct the Velodromo as part of a sports center building program: San Siro stadium (1926), the Milan Lido (1931-36), Cozzi (1933) and Romano (1937) swimming pools.

The Vigorelli became the most important and famous venue for track cycling in Italy. The high-speed configuration of its track made it known internationally: world records were set and championships held there. Moreover, it was often the “Finish” for important road races and also hosted numerous sprint and pursuit contests. Unfortunately, in addition to the track being completely destroyed by fire during the Second World War, an exceptionally heavy snowfall in 1985 led to the roof collapsing onto the wooden track, damaging it severely.

The decline of the velodrome set in after this episode: the track was reconstructed but not the roof. After three years of reduced activity, the Velodrome - also used as a venue for concerts - was closed definitively for cycling. In July 1991, the roof was reconstructed and a new lighting system was installed.

Finally, towards the end of the Nineties, due to company sponsorship of a cycling team, the track was completely restored and the central area of the Velodrome was surfaced with synthetic grass to allow American Football, Five-a-side, and Field Hockey to be played."

The Dream: Reviving the Vigorelli


The famous Velodromo Vigorelli of via Arona 19, Milano, was the site of a demonstration and petition signing by cyclists yesterday calling attention to this cathedral of cycling which has remained unused* and in disrepair for decades.



Driven by a new bicycle culture and a large group of visionary dreamers there are hopes that the Vigorelli track can be returned to the splendor of its heyday. The municipal government of Milano has been criticized for not showing the foresight to recognize how an investment in restoring and improving the structure would increase the visibility for the city, especially the world of cycling. Supporters argue that the Vigorelli would not be a burden to the city but instead a resource such as the e Teatro alla Scala, the San Siro Stadium and the Castello Sforzesco.

In 2007 a new, covered, Vigorelli as part of a sports palace concept was proposed to the mayor of Milano. The proposal would re-launch track racing but will also have the capability of hosting other sports such as basketball, tennis, boxing, hockey, and concerts. At a cost of 50 million Euro, and an estimated 3 years to build, the proposal went nowhere.


In 2009 the specific project plans were unveiled and the next step in the project was to seek financing. The city was committed to funding 12 million Euro of the estimated 50 million Euro project cost; the other 38 million Euro would have come from the private sector. The goal was to inaugurate the new facility in 2012. The main elements of the plan were:
-the exterior is unchanged,
-installation of a transparent bubble roof (photo above)
-new track of 250 meters in length (in order to comply with World Championship regulations; when the Vigorelli was built in 1935 it was 397.57 meters in length),
-permanent seating expanded from 9,000 to 10,000 seats,
-in addition to permanent seating there will be 2,000 track-side seats for track events,
-quick re-configuration of the facility for sporting events (such as basketball, hockey and boxing) and concerts,
-22 box suites

2012 Giro d'Italia: Start and Finish

ICJ reader "Zabriskie's Stache" wrote in Tuesday:

"Hi from Washington, DC!

DC Mayor Adrian Fenty appears likely to lose re-election today. That spells bad things for the possibility of Giro 2012 beginning here. Fenty is a cycling enthusiast and the (likely) next mayor, Vincent Gray, would probably not show the same sort of drive to secure the event.

I knew it was too good to be true!"


Indeed, on Tuesday, in Washington D.C.'s mayoral primary election Fenty (above in pink jersey with Giro director Angelo Zomegan to his left) lost to Vince Gray. "Washington, D.C., is doing some fantastic things right now, and we both want those fantastic things to continue," said Fenty.

Now we will have to wait and see if among those "fantastic things" that will survive will be the Giro d'Italia start.

The Giro finish will be returning to Milan in 2011 after having a fantastic conclusion in the L'Arena of Verona this year. The Giro will conclude next year in the Piazza Duomo. For 2012 the Milan l'assessore comunale allo Sport (city counselor for Sports) has a dream: to have the Giro finish in the Vigorelli veldrome. He will be meeting in the next few days with the FCI (Italian cycling federation) to discuss the plan to invest 10 million euro to renovate the Vigorelli.



In 2007 a 50 million euro project was proposed for a new, covered, Vigorelli that was going to take three years to build. That project was never started.

Golden Era Revealed Through An Open Door

A golden era of cycling revealed through an open door

Milan's Velodromo Vigorelli may now be almost derelict but to the trained eye it still houses some of cycling's greatest memories

Bathed in autumn sunlight, the Velodromo Comunale Vigorelli looks much as it must have done in 1935: a monument to the rakish optimism of futurist architecture. Standing in the north-western suburbs of Milan, not far from the elegant Ippodromo and the majestic San Siro, this compact arena breathes history – and not just that of cycling, since the Beatles played here to a full house of 10,000 screaming Italian fans in the summer of 1965.

It is for its original purpose, however, that the Vigorelli claims a place in legend. Here, on a 400m wooden track, is where Fausto Coppi, Jacques Anquetil and half a dozen two-wheeled heroes set new world records for the distance covered in one hour, which used to be among the sport's great tests. This, too, is where Coppi entered in triumph at the conclusion of one of his victories in the Giro d'Italia.

It is some time, however, since any cyclist, great or unknown, passed through the little door marked "Ingresso atleti". Nowaday the players and opponents of the city's American football club are the stadium's sole tenants and only an uneasy conscience keeps the municipality from tearing down an edifice that was rebuilt in 1945 after Allied firebombs had destroyed the original track.

On this beautiful afternoon the Vigorelli is sternly padlocked at every official entrance, with no caretaker in sight. One doorway, however, is open. And inside, the whole place comes alive.

Bicycles and wheels are hanging from ceiling-mounted racks. Clusters of lightweight steel tubes protrude from shelves. A set of vintage Campagnolo tools nestles in a fitted wooden box, the maker's name engraved in flowing script on its lid, several decades old but ready for daily use.

Alberto Masi, 65 years old, is the man who handles these tools. His father, Faliero Masi, set up this atelier in 1949, quickly establishing such a reputation for quality that leading riders paid him to make frames which were then painted in the colours of the manufacturers to whom they were contracted.

Faliero moved to California in the 1970s, selling the rights to produce bikes under the Masi name in the US before returning home a few years later. He died in 2000, aged 93. Alberto, who learned the craft at his father's knee, now produces a small number of new hand-built frames and spends the rest of his time restoring the classics his father built.

Here, he says, are some of his current projects. This is a Faema-badged machine ridden by the incomparable Eddy Merckx. Here is a Gazelle that belonged to another great Belgian rider Rik van Looy. And there, leaning against the wall in a back room, is a tandem painted in the Bianchi company's trademark sky-blue colour, ridden to a gold medal in the 1948 Olympics at London's Herne Hill track by Renato Perona and Ferdinando Teruzzi, ahead of the British pair of Alan Bannister and Reg Harris.

"Ah, Harris," Alberto Masi exclaims. "Grande campione!" And a friend of the family, he adds, as was Tom Simpson, whose Peugeot bikes were actually Masis in disguise.

Alberto goes up a stepladder to a loft and re-emerges holding a copy of a letter. It's addressed to his father, written from Buenos Aires in 1958 by Fausto Coppi, ordering new frames in time for the Giro d'Italia.

He points up at a corner of the ceiling. There, hanging from a rack, are two welded steel assemblies, in the shape of bike frames, dusty and discoloured. They are, he says, the jigs from which his father made Coppi's bespoke machines: one for road racing, the other for tracks like the Vigorelli, unused since Coppi's death in 1960. Honestly, if you'd taken me to the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in the centre of Milan and shown me the brushes with which Leonardo painted The Last Supper, I couldn't have been more impressed. Sometimes history is just the other side of an open door.

In Part I (http://italiancyclingjournal.blogspot.com/2007/12/velodromo-vigorelli-via-arona-19-milano.html), back in December, 2007, we discussed a proposal that was presented to the Mayor of Milano for a new multi-use Vigorelli.


The specific project plans have now been unveiled and the next step in the project is to seek financing. The city is committed to funding 12 million Euro of the estimated 50 million Euro project cost; the other 38 million Euro would come from the private sector. The goal is to inaugurate the new facility in 2012.

Velodromo Vigorelli, via Arona 19, Milano

















The famous Vigorelli track, also known as the home of Masi, may be finding a new life.


Here is a short translation of the key points of the article that appeared in Gazzetta dello Sport (full article in Italian follows):


A new, covered, Vigorelli has been proposed which will cost 50 million Euro and 3 years to build. It will re-launch track racing but will also have the capability of hosting other sports such as basketball, tennis, boxing, hockey, and concerts. The proposal for a sports palace was presented to the mayor of Milano in July and has been shrouded in silence and mystery since then.


The first objective is not to change the exterior. The second is to install a bubble roof. A new track will be installed of 250 meters in length in order to comply with World Championship regulations; when the Vigorelli was built in 1935 it was 397.57 meters in length with 45 degrees banks in the corners (84 records were established on this track).


For track venues the capacity will be 10,000 spectators.

VIGORELLI Ecco il progetto per rilanciarlo
L' impianto intitolato a Maspes verrebbe coperto per diventare un vero palazzetto dello sport. Costo 50 milioni di euro, tre anni di lavori
Un nuovo Vigorelli, sempre intitolato ad Antonio Maspes, ma interamente coperto, per rilanciare il ciclismo su pista e anche altri sport: basket, pallavolo, tennis, boxe, hockey su ghiaccio. E' questo l' ambizioso e dettagliato progetto presentato al Comune di Milano da «Milano Sport», la società che gestisce 34 impianti sportivi in città. Realizzato nei minimi particolari, a cura dello studio dell' architetto Lucio Zanfi, il progetto è arrivato a fine luglio al sindaco Letizia Moratti, e in settembre alla direzione generale del Comune, all' assessore allo Sport Giovanni Terzi, all' assessore ai lavori pubblici Bruno Simini, e all' assessore allo sviluppo del territorio, Carlo Masseroli. TRASFORMAZIONE Dopo mesi di silenzi e misteri, siamo in grado di rivelare alcuni particolari che possono aiutare a capire come potrebbe essere rilanciato il vecchio Vigorelli, e di conseguenza il ciclismo su pista e molte altre discipline sportive a Milano. Il primo obiettivo è quello di non modificare esternamente la facciata di un impianto sportivo che appartiene alla storia della città e di tutto lo sport italiano. In una zona sempre più centrale, il nuovo Vigorelli si trasformerebbe in un vero e proprio Palazzetto dello Sport in grado di ospitare manifestazioni sportive tutto l' anno. La copertura dell' impianto avverrebbe attraverso una «bolla» traslucida e la chiusura con una vetrata nel rispetto della struttura esterna. All' interno, invece, verrebbe costruita una nuova pista di ciclismo lunga 250 metri che occuperebbe il piano dell' attuale parterre, abbassato di circa 5 metri. In questo modo è possibile trasformare in una tribuna lo spazio ora occupato dalla pista, inserire gli «sky box» e sopra al loro tetto realizzare una seconda tribuna più alta. CONCERTI La capienza del Palazzetto è variabile in base al tipo di impiego. Gli spettatori per il ciclismo sarebbero 10.000, mentre gli sky box sarebbero 24+24 da 22 metri quadri ciascuno. Ma la vera novità è la multifunzionalità dell' impianto con la pista del ciclismo che si abbassa, per favorire la salita al suo posto del campo per gli altri sport. E su questa pedana si potrebbero tenere riunioni e concerti, per sfruttare al massimo l' impianto nel quale sono previsti anche bar e ristoranti. COSTI In base a una prima stima del progetto, suddiviso in varie categorie di opere, il costo finale della riqualificazione del Vigorelli potrebbe arrivare a 50 milioni di euro, con 3 anni di lavoro. E chiaramente dovrebbe essere un gruppo di privati ad accollarsi le spese, con l' aiuto degli sponsor che continuerebbero poi a garantire la vita e la manutenzione del nuovo Palazzetto. A questo punto, quindi, è legittimo chiedersi perché questo progetto, apparentemente perfetto, sia rimasto così a lungo nei vari uffici del Comune, visto che la sua realizzazione non danneggerebbe nessuno. Anzi, se andasse in porto, potrebbe finalmente rivivere il vecchio Vigorelli, permettendo ai milanesi, e non solo a loro, di assistere più comodamente a un numero sempre maggiore di eventi sportivi. * * * 250 I metri dell' anello La nuova pista in legno sarà lunga 250 metri, misura regolamentare per ospitare i Mondiali. L' anello attuale del Vigorelli, inaugurato il 24 marzo 1935, è di 397,57 metri; 45 l' inclinazione massima delle curve. Vi sono stati realizzati 84 record

«È proprio una bella notizia di Natale. Per me il Vigorelli è stata una casa, e ora questo progetto per rilanciarlo mi fa così felice, sono così entusiasta... Se serve per ridargli un futuro, sono pronto a fare una petizione al sindaco Moratti e al presidente della Regione, Formigoni». Parole del grande Fiorenzo Magni, dopo l' anteprima della Gazzetta dello Sport sul nuovo piano per riportare in vita lo storico impianto milanese, intitolato ad Antonio Maspes. PISTA DA 250 Il progetto, presentato al Comune da «Milano Sport», la società che gestisce 34 impianti sportivi in città, è stato realizzato dallo studio dell' architetto Lucio Zanfi ed è da luglio all' esame del sindaco. Il «Vigo» diventerebbe una struttura per ciclismo, basket, sport del ghiaccio, pallavolo, boxe, ma anche per meeting e congressi. La pista attuale di 397 metri verrebbe sostituita con una regolamentare da 250, per poter ospitare i Mondiali. Sante Gaiardoni, due volte olimpionico a Roma 1960 e storico rivale di Antonio Maspes, aggiunge: «E' da 6 anni che lotto per il Vigorelli. L' anno scorso mi sono anche candidato sindaco per far ricredere la gente su questo impianto, lo volevano addirittura buttare giù per fare parcheggi. Ci passo davanti tutti i giorni. Lunedì ero al Bar Vigo e, come sempre, mi è scesa una lacrima a vederlo così in disarmo. Sapere che c' è questo nuovo progetto mi dà forza. Non ci credevo più. Sono pronto a mettermi a disposizione per insegnare il ciclismo ai bambini: è importante che, oltre alla pista, ci sia un anello per i giovani. Dipende tutto dal sindaco: se darà l' okay, poi gli sponsor arriveranno da soli, una struttura multifunzione è molto interessante da gestire. Speriamo davvero di farcela, anche Maspes ne sarebbe contento». FAVOREVOLI E CRITICI «Coprire il Vigorelli? Magari, si risolverebbe una cosa pazzesca, e cioè che l' Italia non ha un velodromo - afferma Gianni Bugno -. Così com' è, non ha più senso di esistere, anche se poi, quando si fa un impianto polifunzionale, gli altri sport avrebbero più spazio del ciclismo». Beppe Saronni, che con la Scuola Fausto Coppi è cresciuto nel Vigorelli, dice: «Spero che questo sia un progetto reale e realizzabile. La pista lunga non è più attuale. Quella del "Vigo" non è la collocazione ideale per un velodromo per i problemi di viabilità, comunque ben venga tutto quello che porta ad avere una pista coperta». Solo Francesco Moser, che al Vigorelli il 3 ottobre 1986 con 49,802 stabilì il record dell' ora a livello del mare, è drastico: «Monumento storico di cosa? E' cemento vecchio. Se lo buttano giù, fanno prima. Potrebbero fare una struttura migliore, con parcheggi sotterranei e magari con un tetto più resistente di quello del vecchio Palasport». * * * COME SARA' Impianto polivalente Ci sarà la copertura Appare così il Vigorelli nel progetto dell' architetto Zanfi. L' impianto milanese di via Arona sarà coperto con un tetto trasparente. All' interno, la pista attuale di 397 metri sarà sostituita da ulteriori tribune, mentre verrà costruito un anello regolamentare di 250 metri. La modularità dell' impianto consentirà di alternare diversi «campi»: dal ciclismo al basket, dalla pallavolo agli sport del ghiaccio, fino ai concerti. Il costo dei lavori (3 anni) oscilla sui 50 milioni di euro
